As I was scrolling through my feed the other day, I came across a video where the speaker claimed that growing up in a small town is a disadvantage. They said it limits opportunities and success, that people from small towns have to struggle a lot more than others. I couldn’t disagree more. In fact, growing up in a small town in Haryana (India) is the reason I’ve been able to achieve certain things in my life, and I truly believe it gave me an edge that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Here’s how my experience from a small town shaped me and made me more successful:

  1. Independence at a Young Age

Growing up in a small town gave me the independence I needed early on. From a very young age, I would hop on my cycle, run errands, and do chores around the town. The freedom to explore, the confidence to take on tasks by myself — it all helped me develop a sense of responsibility and self-reliance. In a small town, the world feels more connected and manageable, which boosts your confidence.

2. The Power of Networking

Everyone knows everyone in a small town, and because of that, you learn how to network early. I could go from one house to another, meet different people, and build connections. There’s a certain ease when everyone is approachable. Networking wasn’t something I had to learn later — I learned it in my own backyard.

3. Grit and Determination

In my small town, no one told me what I couldn’t do. In fact, I heard more discouraging words after I left. Small towns tend to have an encouraging spirit because everyone’s seen each other grow, and no one judges you too harshly for trying new things. I was able to build resilience and grit in an environment that believed in your potential. That “I can do it” attitude was instilled in me long before I had to face the harsh realities of competition.

4. Empathy and Human Values

One of the things I love most about small towns is the sense of community. People genuinely care about each other. There’s an understanding of human values that you don’t always get in the hustle of big cities. I grew up knowing how to listen, how to be there for others, and how to help my neighbors. These values have made me more empathetic and understanding, which has helped me in both personal and professional relationships.

5. Clarity in Communication

In a small town, English wasn’t something that was spoken all the time. However, the limited practice made me more conscious of how I spoke and what I said. I learned to be more concise, precise, and mindful in my communication. The practice of simplicity and clarity is a skill I carry with me today.

6. Staying Grounded

Small town life keeps you grounded. You know your roots. Your neighbors are your family, and the values that shape you are simple but profound. Whenever things get tough, I find myself going back to the basics and remembering where I came from. It helps me stay calm and focused, no matter how challenging things get.

7. Resourcefulness and Creativity

Growing up in a small town, you often learn to make do with what you have. When resources are limited, you become resourceful and creative. You don’t have the luxury of relying on others, so you innovate to solve problems. This ability to think outside the box has been invaluable in both my personal and professional life.

8. Building Stronger Relationships

In small towns, you form deeper, longer-lasting relationships. The connections you make aren’t just for career advancement, they are genuine friendships. I learned early on how to build trust and maintain long-term relationships that have helped me throughout my life, whether in work or personal matters.

9. A Different Pace of Life

Living in a small town teaches you to appreciate a slower, more thoughtful pace of life. While many cities rush through life, small towns teach you to savor moments, be present, and work with a sense of balance. This has helped me maintain perspective and avoid burnout in my career and personal life.

10. Resilience in the Face of Challenges

Small towns often face unique challenges, whether it’s economic hardships, lack of infrastructure, or fewer job opportunities. Growing up in this environment means you learn to deal with adversity and persevere. This resilience has given me the strength to overcome challenges in life and work that others might find overwhelming.

So, is being from a small town really a disadvantage?

For me, it was the opposite. It shaped me into the person I am today, giving me the independence, networking skills, grit, empathy, communication skills, and grounding that have been crucial to my success.

But I want to hear from you — do you think small town living holds you back? Or has it, like me, given you a unique advantage in life? Drop a comment and let’s start a conversation about how our roots shape our journey.
